We arrived at the Asticou Inn due to a happy accident. We booked at another hotel in Bar Harbor and were really disappointed. We were ready to leave after a day for New Hampshire to excape the masses when we saw The Asticou Inn on a drive of the island. At check in they told us there would be a wedding that weekend. There was, and it wound down at 10pm. They make their living on weddings- so ask. The views are spectacular, kind of funny to look out at a harbor full of Hinkleys-the hotel a gem architecturally and the staff was friendly. The food is great. Clay tennis courts, cold pool (oh well) amazing garden across the street and another a short splended hike up a hill or drive up. It was what I imagioned our Maine vacation would be.

The Asticou overlooks a beautiful harbor and has charm, but has limited ammenities. No air conditioning, limited elevator service, quirky service help. We were overcharged and had prove the rate we were quoted, champagne sent to us to celebrate our 20th anniversary was delivered while we were out at 10 am. Our room was not the king we reserved, but a queen on the top floor with crooked ceilings. Continental breakfast and dining staff were very nice. Definately ""Old World"" charm.
