We went to the Chaminade for a wedding. Check in time was 4:00 and when we arrived after 4:00 we were told we had to wait for our room, because it was not ready yet. Once we got to our room we found the air conditioning did not work and the room temperature was above 80 degrees. I called the front desk and they said they would have maintenance come check on it which they never did. The walls in this place are paper thin, there is absolutely no soundproofing what so ever. Not only could we hear the people walking around in the room above us, we could also hear every time people were walking in the hall outside of our room.

My wife and I were trying to get away for a long weekend and thought the Chaminade looked great.( with a four diamond rating) The staff overall was unfriendly. We were ignored at the front desk upon arrival, when the person started to check us in his personal cell phone rang and he decided to check that first. The rooms are supposed to be newly remodeled, I dont know what they did other than paint and add some new bedspreads. The sink had hair in it and the carpets smelled like mold (musty), the overall cleanliness of the facility was substandared. The beds are so uncomfortable I thought about sleeping in the car. They used the old mattresses and put Down( feather) pads over them. There is some kind of sewer problem, you have to keep the plunger down on the sink and water in it or sewer gas comes in the room. The property itself is very nice but not worth the $16.00 per day resort fee. There were so many people around the small pool we didnt even try to swim. People were setting up chairs in the field next to the pool area, for lack of room to accommadate the number of guests. The bar and resturaunt are over priced for what you get. The view is nice off the deck. The shinning star of the trip was the kid that valets the cars. Great personality, full of local information, which is very important because you won't want to hang out at the resort.

Chaminade is a very nice hotel; a mountain retreat. We enjoyed our stay and will stay here the next time we are in Santa Cruz. The grounds are beautiful and the staff is very friendly. The spa and lounge are relaxing. The pool is a salt water pool and very warm. The rooms are over sized with two queen beds. Parking was good, even with a budget truck taking up four spaces, we were always able to park close to our room. However, I would only rate this hotel as a three star. The beds were okay but my back hurt every morning. The water pipes are loud. The water presser was weak in the shower - not a relaxing experience. Bathroom was small but two sinks were nice with a family. There were several spinders in the room and cob webs. My kids had trouble going to sleep with daddy-long-legs hanging over their heads in bed. There was no refrigerator or microwave.

The service was good, the food was great, location outstanding, the beds were not as comfortable as I expected. The bathrooms are small. The beds are feathery pokey things with some mean allergy side effects. They did try to make up for it (when I asked for alternative bedding and it was never delivered) by giving us breakfast.

We stayed for one night 3/21/09 and had a wonderful experience. We enjoyed the couples' massage at the newly opened spa as well as the outside hot tub there and steam and dry sauna. The work out space was full of great equipment including weight machines, foam roll, balls etc. The room was a suite and was decorated in a fun way with bright colors. The bathroom was very small but once we heard that it was once a Catholic boys' school, the halls and the rooms/bathrooms felt a little dorm like, but certainly updated and comfortable. The bed had a down cushion on it that got a bit rumpled but the linens were soft and the room very clean. There was a wedding reception there that night as well as a fundraiser, but the sound level was quiet in the room and outside. We enjoyed the brunch the next day at the hotel restaurant which was a little pricey but excellent! We thought overall, it was a good value and will return when we are in Santa Cruz next. We also dined close by at the Cafe Cruz which was recommended by the massage therapist and the food was great. The hotel lobby is upscale and modern. A great find!
