The staff is always friendly and courteous. My 3am check-ins present no problem and they're always willing to answer questions about activities even at that late hour. Rooms always clean. The view always beautiful. So many activities to do at Skyland and Big Mountain not to mention the miles and miles of trails. Guests are friendly and you will meet those who come every year...hikers, bicyclists, motorcyclists, families, couples, etc.

Restaurant has a great view; I've never had bad service nor bad food, but wait times around dinnertime will creep up to an hour. I usually go after the rush. They have folk performers to sing at night in the lodge bar and grill area. Summertime has campfires at night. Horseback riding available, but I've always been too busy to take advantage of. :)

Room was a standard hotel room size, small bathroom with tub. Patio screen door opened to a breathtaking patio or balcony depending on your floor. Average rate was $104 for the 10 days I spent there. To me, the location and atmosphere and peaceful serene is well worth the price; I've never considered staying anywhere else. Resort is on mile 41 of Skyline Drive, but although it sometimes seems far removed from 'real life', you're really not too far away from civilization; there is a SuperWalmart in Luray, VA about a 35 minute drive from the resort, down the mountain, which you may find yourself at if you forget what time the restaurants close at.

FYI There will not be "luxuries" you may expect from a hotel...don't expect a TV and there will be no A/C, microwave, or compact fridge. For me, it's a nice change of pace that I look forward to every year.

Location and ambiance of a rustic mountain lodge make this place special. Problem is it's managed by a 3rd party company (profit oriented). Restaurant (same company) is grossly over-priced. $49-$69 would be more appropriate for such an old rustic room without even air conditioning (it was hot). 10% reservation fee is excessive. Paid $27 for 2 pieces of chicken each for 2 of us. I can afford it, but nobody likes getting ripped. A truely great experience, but rooms need a major refurb, to mandate anywhere near what they charge. Beds horrible. Views great. Mountain water great.
