An older hotel whose lobby indicates original elegance but is looking a little shabby now. Rooms are clean but small, same with bathrooms although the tile in shower etc. appears to have been redone. Ate in restaurant one evening and the food was good and comparable with outside restaurants, service very pleasant. Pool in basement was definitely old-fashioned but there was a plus in that guests have a separate elevator so that they don't have to use the very small one in the lobby with other guests. There was a hot tub/spa but it had been drained and repaired so we couldn't use it as the water hadn't heated up yet. Although located downtown, many of the more modern shops and malls are located in the western sector and therefore a 10-15 minute drive away. We were able to get a room facing the water which was nice but view was limited because of old-fashioned narrow window design. Although the area looked a little rough, we had no difficulty in parking our vehicle outside etc. nor was it particularly noisy however we should note we were there in late October so definitely not height of tourist season. Overall we found Thunder Bay to be a little dismal looking, panhandler approached us on the street and city gave the overall impression of being a little shabby but we didn't spend long (2 nights) so we may be a little unfair. The name and write-up gave us an impression of a grander hotel which appeared to be giving very reasonable rates. Once we checked-in we realized that it was priced to what we were getting and, the material on hand actually refers to it as a motel not a hotel.

The room was great for the money - nice and spacious. Beds were a little on the hard side for all of us but still had a good nights sleep despite being near the train tracks (which you didn't hear at all) Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was excellent value with more then enough. Easy walk to many near by restaurant and to the lake front. Ask for room with lake view as there isn't much to see on the city side. Location felt safe.
