We rode Amtrak to Williams, then took the Grand Canyon Railroad to the Grand Canyon for a night at the Park, then back to Williams and the Amtrak train back to Santa Fe. We chose the Rodeway Inn as an alternative to the Grand Canyon Inn because it was about $100 cheaper a night. However, we had to drag our luggage about 5 blocks through Willams back and forth from the railroad station (the Grand Canyon inn is adjacent to the station). So, if you are able and willing to roll your luggage 5 blocks, at 3:30am to catch the eastbound Amtrak, you can save money. If not, pay for the convenience of sleeping next to the station. The Rodeway is a basic "Route 66" motel. The staff was friendly, but the office closes at 11:00pm with no night clerk. The room was sparse, but clean. Road noise was minimal. There is a "60s" diner across the street with excellent hamburgers, and a steak place nearby that was recommended, but we didn't try. Your choices in downtown Williams, within walking distance of the Grand Canyon Railroad station, are very limited. So you either pay $160+ for staying at the nice Grand Canyon Inn, or pay $60+ at the Rodeway or Econolodge and walk. I was told that Williams has a taxi, but we didn't see one and didn't try it.

An old motel that is being kept up well. Our clean room had refrig, microwave, DirecTV, good furniture, wifi, and a few extra electric outlets that we put to good use. The small air conditioner was inadequate to cool the room. The moderate-sized room had plenty of space and furniture to go with its one king sized bed, which was kind of hard. No pool, no laundry. Overall, we were more pleased than not. At any rate, if you are going to Grand Canyon, rooms here are a quarter to a third the cost of the newer places in Tusayan, and Williams is a more interesting town.
