My car developed a mechanical problem during the IKE evacuation. I pulled into the Palace Inn and discovered new paint, upscale granite counter tops and nice electronic components to play CD music and DVD movies. The room ceilings are vaulted and painted to appear as blue sky and clouds. Arched pinch walls divide the room in twain and also separate the bathroom area. Large wall mirrors reflect the palm tree murals and wonderful ceilings causing the room to appear double its actual size. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this hotel was esthetically; very well planned. The only problem I could pick out was that the decorative tile outside the room doors becomes slippery when wet. And IKE made everything very wet. The hurricane blew down the telephone and power lines sometime after midnight. Without electricity, there is no water. Even the vending machines do not operate without power. One guest backed up his company truck with a gas generator and ran it until checkout the next morning. It seemed as though I slept with a lawnmower in my room. However, I might have done the same thing had I been so equipped. I hit something that fell from a truck with my car wheel and it would not roll much farther. The owner stopped by the next day and was very helpful. I was offered the use of his cell phone so I could call for rescue. He allowed me to park my car in the corner of the lot for a short period until I could retrieve it for repair. My ride arrived after dark and I packed up my clothes in the dark. I accidentally left a few items in the darkened room and hope to reclaim them when I return to rescue my car.
